Actors Steve Coogan and Anna Friel were in Eastbourne this week to put the finishing touches to a new film.
The Alan Partridge actor stars alongside the former Brookside belle in Channel 4’s forthcoming feature King of Soho and the pair completed their seven-week schedule with scenes shot on and around Eastbourne Pier.
Coogan, who shot to fame as the charmless sports reporter on the cult TV show The Day Today, plays Paul Raymond, the Soho porn king whose personal life was as vibrant as the empire he made his money from, while Friel appears as his first wife Jean Bradley.
The action spans from the 1950s to the 1990s and a host of vintage cars turned heads along the coast during the two-day shoot, which also took in Beachy Head Road and Eastbourne College.
A crew of 20 stayed in Eastbourne to wrap up the film under the watchful eye of director Michael Winterbottom, the man behind last year’s hit series The Trip, which also starred Coogan.
Tom Howard, the film’s location manager, was delighted with the outcome.
He said, “We came to Eastbourne to film a 1950s scene on the pier and two scenes at a private school – which Eastbourne College stood in for.
“We also completed numerous driving shots on the South Downs, featuring various period cars.
“Bringing a film crew to Eastbourne has been an easy task, with a pro active film office, easy parking and of course helpful location owners who have made us feel very welcome. It certainly has been a breath of fresh air from filming in busy Soho.
“Each time I have filmed in Eastbourne it has always been enjoyable and the town always looks great on screen. It’s easy to film period movie scenes as the architecture stands in well for all manner of periods. I look forward to bring another crew to Eastbourne in the future.”
King of Soho is the latest in a long line of films which have used Eastbourne as a setting.
The modern adaptation of the cult classic Brighton Rock was shot locally, while Eastbourne has been used in Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, Wimbledon, the Harry Potter series and a James Bond film – among others.
King of Soho is due out this autumn.
