Sporting achievements to be celebrated at joint reception

THE ACHIEVEMENTS of sportspeople across Sussex – including Olympians and Paralympians – will be celebrated at a civic event next week.

East and West Sussex County Councils are hosting a joint reception at the Sussex County Cricket Club in Hove on September 12 to thank local sportspeople for their contribution to British sporting success.

Councillor Chris Dowling, the Chairman of East Sussex County Council and Councillor Mike Coleman, the Chairman of West Sussex County Council will be hosting the event.

Those attending will include Olympic relay torchbearers, local sportspeople including several Olympians and Paralympians, and civic guests.

Councillor Chris Dowling said, “The London 2012 Olympic Games was an amazing success story for both British sport and Great Britain plc and now the Paralympics are continuing that feel-good factor with Team GB delivering a host of gold, silver and bronze medals.

“Many of our Sussex sportsmen and woman have contributed to this wonderful year for sport.

“On behalf of the residents of East and West Sussex, it will be a privilege to thank our sportspeople and others, including the Olympic relay torchbearers, for their efforts.”

The civic reception, which starts at 6.30pm, will also include the launch by Active Sussex of the Sussex Sports Awards 2012.
