Students from Sussex Downs College took part in a conference about the role of young people in the future economy and included speeches and workshops from top business chiefs.
It aimed to inspire accounting, business, economics, enterprise and finance students at the College to think about possible career paths and how they can help drive our economy forward.
Guest speakers included Adam Frampton from Shirlaws Business Coaching; Will Tully, a worldwide compliance officer at the BBC; Shaun Mulvey, marketing manager for insurance claims handlers Be Valued and Powerplay Direct; and award-winning digital entrepreneur Julian Hall, whose book Entrepreneur to Ultrapreneur – 100 Ways to Up Your Game, was recently published.
Workshop leaders included business consultant Rachel Stone; Andrew Dean and Michael Williams from chartered accountants Plummer Parsons; Simon Herbert and Andy Ferguson from Natwest; and Sarah Parsons, a research graduate in international criminal law from Sussex Downs College.
The event was organised by one of the College’s business enterprise apprentices, Siobhan Hopkins.
She said, “The conference was a great success with excellent speakers. A common theme from the speakers was that success comes from having passion rather than pursuing money. As well as information about various career paths to consider and new interview techniques, it was reiterated that students need to be confident in themselves and their opinions, ideas and goals.
Tim Whitmore, head of the College, said, “I thought the whole event was brilliant. The guest speakers hit just the right notes and the reaction from the students was amazing. It was so interesting to hear the messages of high expectations, aspiration, passion, self-belief and excellence put across by successful business people in a way that motivated the students.”
