Two schoolgirls helped to raise more than £900 for charity after encouraging local businesses to support their cause.
Best friends Grace Maynard and Georgia Truman decided they wanted to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and the Sussex Cancer Fund and set about organising an event in aid of the two very worthy causes.
The 11-year-olds, who are both pupils at Ratton School, were going to hold a coffee morning but with so much support flooding in from businesses they decided to tie it in with a raffle.
Grace’s mum Kate, who lives in Bridgemere Road, said, “They wrote to businesses in the town asking for raffle donations and they had a fantastic raffle, it just grew and grew.
“It took place at our house and it was absolutely packed.”
Among prizes donated included a pair of Hunter wellies from Cambridge & Co, chocolates from M&S, beauty products from Boots, tickets to the panto, bottles of wine, cinema tickets and a mascot day football package from Eastbourne Borough Football Club.
M&S also provided biscuits to go with the cakes and hot drinks provided at the coffee morning and raffle which took place last month.
An impressive £913 was raised from the day.
Kate added, “We started off hoping to raise around £100 and then this went up to £200 and then thought we might be able to collect £400.
“It was their own idea and they even spent the whole of the Friday making cakes for the event.”
