Rosie sets up balloon biz at 11

Eastbourne youngster Rosie Clifford has already started reaping the rewards from self-employment after setting up her own balloon-modelling service – at just 11 years old.

The Ocklynge Junior School pupil only took up the hobby at Christmas 2012 after receiving some balloons in her stocking. Little did she know that present was to lead to a nifty little business venture for the bright girl.

Rosie, from Old Town, started using her balloon modelling skills for entertainment at a friend’s birthday party and, through word of mouth and a collection of business cards, news of the service spread across the town.

Now, she’s fully booked up at parties and special events throughout March and has her sights firmly set on expanding her balloon artist business during the rest of the year.

Her mother, Catherine Clifford, said, “I am so proud of Rosie for setting up her own business at such an early age.

“She’s obviously has got the mind of a budding entrepreneur and hopes to expand her business over the next few years.

“People love the fact that they have a kid entertaining at their kids party as she is on the same level as the children and they can really relate to her.”

Rosie learns the tricks of her trade by watching and memorising tutorials on YouTube and even hopes to start running workshops to help other youngsters master balloon modelling.

Her eight-year-old sister, Matilda, now has her sights set on following in her sibling’s footsteps by starting a face painting business to run alongside Rosie’s balloon entertainment.

Youngest sibling Amber also wants to make it a real family affair. The five-year-old wants to introduce craft stalls at the events Rosie attends.

Catherine added, “She hopes that she won’t have to wash dishes in a greasy spoon for pocket money in her teens, but will instead grow her business and continue to make money like that.

“Perhaps I will be able to retire in a few years!”
