Organisers of this year’s Eastbourne Sunshine Carnival say there has been a record number of musical entries so far.
The seafront procession is on Saturday May 31.
The theme is Rio by the Sea and pageant master Dave Cooper said the theme will reflect the fact it is the 2014 FIFA World Cup and hopes it will be a celebration of colour and grab the town’s imagination.
He also said there had already been a record number of musical entries and appealed for anyone wishing to enter to get their forms in.
After a 15-year hiatus, the popular event returned in 2012 and was followed by another success last year. More than 1,500 walkers turned out in May 2013, with 25,000 fans and supporters lining the seafront route.
Last year’s Carnival also introduced a new competitive edge with entries competing for a Best in the Show award, which was won by the 23rd Eastbourne Scout Group.
As well as 20 highly commended floats and walking entries, trophies were also presented to Eastbourne Theatres as Best Commercial Entrant and Eastbourne Working Men’s Club, which was recognised as Best Voluntary Group.
Mr Cooper said, “This year’s procession will begin at the Western Lawns, heading east along Royal Parade to Princes Park offering the widest variety of music and entertainment to date.
“We are planning to make this year’s carnival even bigger and better. A number of organisations have already signed up demonstrating the continued support for the event and we were very pleased with the messages of support we received after last year’s Carnival.”
