Police and fire investigators are carrying out a joint investigation to try and determine the cause of the devastating fire that happened yesterday (Wednesday, July 30) on Eastbourne Pier.

Detective Inspector Mark O’Brien said, “The cause of the fire is currently unexplained and it may take some days for us to establish a fuller picture.

“In the meantime we are asking anyone who was on the pier at or just before the fire broke out, shortly after 3pm on Wednesday, to contact us if they have any video footage or stills photos they shot at that time. If you help please call us via 101 or email 101@sussex.pnn.police.ukquoting Operation Barsham. This could help us to put together the circumstances.”

The cordon on the road immediately outside the pier is being removed but the structure is unsafe and a cordon will remain around the base of the pier where debris has fallen on to the beach. Emergency services that the public for their co-operation in avoiding that area in particular.
