The owners of Eastbourne Pier have said their thoughts are with the family and colleagues of a workman who died yesterday after falling from the Pier onto the beach.
Cuerden Leisure called the event “a terrible tragedy”, and said the company was working with Sussex Police to establish what had happened.
The 44-year-old workman from Cumbria fell from the Pier at around 4pm yesterday and received a serious head injury.
He was declared dead at the scene and taken to Eastbourne mortuary.
His next of kin have been informed.
Meanwhile the Health and Safety Executive has said the investigation into the death will take months and possibly years to complete.
It is not yet known how the investigation will affect the timetable of renovation work on the Pier.
