A popular language exchange club is now inviting residents to meet twice a week to spruce up their Spanish or boost their English speaking skills.

The group, called Eastbourne Spanish Meetup, was the brainchild of Sergio Rodriguez who had been a member of a similar club in London where people of different nationalities meet to exchange tips and information on learning languages.

The Spanish-born 41-year-old hit on the idea of setting up a like-minded club in Eastbourne when he moved to the South Coast and with the help of friends the first meeting was set up in summer 2011 and it has since gone from strength to strength. The group used to meet just on Thursdays but now meets on Mondays as well. The club, which has 94 members, gets together at 2pm on Mondays and 3.30pm on Thursdays at 0 Farol Portuguese restaurant on Seaside Road.

Sergio, who was born in Aviles and came to the UK in 2000, said, “It’s free and an informal get together.

“We are always looking for new members to our club from all levels from beginners to fluent speakers.”

The sessions are open to anyone and a mix of nationalities including Chinese, Portugese, Latvian attend. The group asks for a voluntary £1 a month which goes towards the upkeep of its website. See or call 07759 019154.
