Helen, 31 and Lauren, 32, are hoping to raise £3,000 for the Martha Trust, a residential centre providing lifelong care for 33 adults with profound physical and multiple learning difficulties, based on The Ridge in Hastings. The Trust provides support, compassion and encouragement to residents, enabling them to lead as normal lives as possible.

Helen works at Martha Trust and, witnessing the important work they do, she was inspired to raise vital funds for them, but says training for the Marathon isn’t easy. “Anyone that knows me well, will know how hard I find running,” she said. “It doesn’t come naturally to me and training is especially hard during the winter months when it’s dark, cold, wet and miserable. However, I am really excited about the challenge and I know Lauren and I will laugh our way round if nothing else.”

Although Lauren says she loves running, she has been out of training for a while having been pregnant with her daughter Sofia, now aged three months. “We have crazily decided to take on the challenge of the London Marathon, raising money for Martha Trust, she said. “This is an amazing charity where Helen works and sees first hand the brilliant work they do.

“The challenge of getting back into shape and being anywhere near fit enough to complete a full marathon is huge. We are training very hard, and will also be running the Hastings Half Marathon as a ‘warm up’ event.”

Having already raised well over £1,000 the friends are well on their way to their £3,000 target. They hope the money will contribute towards specialist equipment that safeguards the dignity and independence of residents at Martha Trust, and individually tailored therapy programmes that improves health and wellbeing. Helen added: “Sponsorship will also fund entertainment, technology, outings and activities that engage, stimulate and challenge the residents and help them experience life to the full.” To donate visit: www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/helenandlauren
