The new facilities, one of two play parks to be provided by Petworth Town Council at a cost of £80,000, have been behind fencing since they were completed before Christmas and the play equipment has been sitting in a muddy bog.

Residents who were furious they had been not consulted before building work began in front of their Old Pond Mews homes, warned the area would become flooded after heavy rain.

They said the clue was in the name of the road – land under the new play park had been a pond which older residents remembered skating on in the winter.

But chairman of the town council Chris Kemp said the Hampers Green play park had been inspected and the trim trail and zip wire areas were now ready to use. He admitted it was still boggy under the two towers and the swings.

“Sadly we have to accept the weather has worked against us. We were so keen to get this much needed facility built for Hampers Common families, but hindsight is a great thing and it was probably the wrong time of year. I must ask the residents to be patient.”
