A moped group which boasts members from across the south east has enjoyed roaring success and increased its number of ride outs as interest in the organisation revs up.

The South East Moped Enthusiasts Group (SEMEG) was set up in the 1970s and is a not for profit organisation made up of classic moped and autocycle fans.

The club, which has more than 200 members, is gearing up for one of its events in Hailsham in March.

Hailsham resident Barry Jackson, whose collection includes a Rally RM6 run-about scooter 1967 model and a Mobylette Cady, is the group‘s assistant events organiser.

The 34-year-old said, “We had a successful year last year and keep growing.

“We’re putting on more and more events in different areas.”

In 2013 it held an event every four to six weeks but during this year it is hoping to be able to develop the idea of introducing one every weekend in the county.

The group’s current membership ranges from the age of 17, with its oldest member aged 93. People who have chance to catch a glimpse of the team on a ride out can expect to see a range of old and modern moped, scooters and bikes.

The ride outs include a course of between 20 to 40 miles through the countryside and people interested in taking part do not have to be members of SEMEG. As well as the ride outs the organisation also holds auto jumbles.

The Hailsham event on March 30, which is called the Pevensey Levels Run, involves meeting up in the town in the morning before setting off with hopefully a stop off for lunch at a country pub.

Mr Jackson added, “The event in Hailsham is the first run we have had in this area and we are hoping it will attract a good deal of interest.

“It’s a case of the more the merrier. We hope to attract spectators at some of the points on our ride outs too.”
