There is a strong smell of gas across Eastbourne and neighbouring towns this morning (January 22).
The pong is down to a gas leak in France, which has drifted across the Channel. Some in Eastbourne have described a smell of gas or diesel as a result.
A gas leak at a Normandy chemical plant, near Rouen, left the unpleasant but ‘non-toxic’ odour that could be smelt 62 miles away in Paris and in Britain too.
Work to stop the leak was ongoing in the early hours of this morning.
A local news website said the gas had caused migraines, irritations and nausea among some residents of Rouen.
