EASTBOURNE teacher Jeremy Forrest can be extradited back to the UK, a French court ruled this morning.

The 30-year-old maths teacher from Bishop Bell School was arrested in Bordeaux last week by French police after a European Arrest Warrant was issued on suspicion of child abduction.

He initially appeared in court before three magistrates on Tuesday morning, when Forrest’s lawyers said they would not be opposing extradition.

This morning, Forrest did not appear in court, but was represented by lawyer Daniel Lalanne. The married man from Ringmer is currently being held in a detention centre just outside Bordeaux.

This morning, the court agreed to the extradition request and Forrest now has to be flown back to the UK within the next 10 days. Reports have suggested that he could arrive back as early as later today.

Mr Lalanne said after the hearing he did not know when Mr Forrest would return to the UK but that it could be “at any moment”.

“The decision was as expected,” he said. “Jeremy Forrest will be handed over to the British authorities with his agreement.”

Mr Lalane said the extradition could happen “quickly”, adding: “I cannot be more specific than that.”
