A GROUP of Eastbourne firefighters are set to have their charity fundraising efforts recognised by the Prime Minister
In May the Blazing Saddles crew, 11 members of the Whitley Road Fire Station’s Green Watch, raised thousands of pounds for Clic Sargent and the Firefighter’s Charity through a four-day 1,000-mile trek around the British Isles.
Next month two members of the group, Matt Harrison CM Bob Newton, MBE will attend a Downing Street reception hosted by David Cameron.
The plucky firefighters have also been nominated for the Spirit of Fire Awards 2012 which will also take place on the same day London on October 19.
The annual event celebrates remarkable acts of bravery in the UK’s fire community, as well as outstanding dedication to The Fire Fighters Charity.
Blazing Saddles are one of the shortlisted nominees for the category of Team Supporter of the Year.
Crew manager Bob Newton MBE said they are all very pleased, proud and honoured to be nominated and short-listed for this award.
Bob will be joined on the evening by fellow Blazing Saddles crew members David Nichols, Matt Harrison, Alex Plowman and Steve Doidge.
When they returned from the trip he told the Gazette, “It was an epic trip around the UK and the team has lots of lovely memories of a fantastic four day journey. So many people went out of their way to help and support us.
“On behalf of the team I would like to mention our friends from Merseyside Fire and Rescue, Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue and Leicester Fire and Rescue who did so much to support us on our journey. Also the many local businesses and members of the public who supported us so far with our Blazing Saddles project.”
They have already raised £11,000 and anyone wishing to donate can do so by taking donations to the fire station or by through https://www.justgiving.com/EastbourneFireStation-GreenWatch
