People who are distracted while they are cooking and start fires are to be targeted in a new campaign.
Eastbourne’s firefighters and staff at Argos have joined forces to save lives by providing kitchen timers.
The local Community Safety Team in Eastbourne approached Argos who agreed to jointly fund an initiative to offer kitchen timers to those most at risk.
East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service chief Dave Sheppard said, “A significant number of fires that we attend in Eastbourne are caused by people becoming distracted whilst they are cooking their meal.
“We are particularly concerned about people living alone and also couples with young children who could be more prone to this.”
The kitchen timers will be offered where a specific risk is identified by the Community Safety Team which visits homes in the Eastbourne area.
The team at the Community Fire Station in Whitley Road offer free Home Safety Visits and talks on fire safety in the home.
Eastbourne branch manager at Argos Sarah Hayler said, “We are delighted to be able to work in partnership with Eastbourne’s firefighters to help make the residents of Eastbourne a little bit safer.”
