East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has found a novel way of recycling hoses which can no longer be used for firefighting – by donating them to local animal welfare centres.

The centres are using the old hoses to make shelters for its four-legged residents and toys including ‘food balls’ that are great for chewing on and hiding treats inside.

Head of engineering at the Fire and Rescue Service Bill Brewster said, “These hoses couldn’t be used by firefighters anymore and were taken out of service, but we didn’t want to just throw them away.

“We look for different ways this sort of equipment can be re-used and we are thrilled that the animals are benefitting.”
