An initiative to make high streets more parent friendly across the country has been welcomed by Eastbourne MP Caroline Ansell.

The National Childbirth Trust (NCT), a leading charity parenting charity, launched its Parent Friendly Places Charter, and coffee chain Starbucks is the first retailer to adopt it, pledging to provide a parent-friendly environment in more than 800 stores.

The charter commits to ensuring a supportive environment for parents, particularly when it comes to feeding their child whether by breast, bottle or high chair – or a mix of all three.

A training programme, designed by qualified professionals from NCT, has been delivered by Starbucks to its baristas across the country.

Mrs Ansell said: “This is an excellent initiative that I hope will be embraced by more shops and retailers across the UK in the months to come,”

She added: “As a mother myself, I know that it can be awkward to ask for hot water to heat up a bottle or space to feed in comfort and not be embarrassed, so this move will allow parents to feel more at ease when out knowing they have the support of staff if comments about feeding or noise are made.”
