Does Haywards Heath's new station development whistle?

An investigation is underway to determine why a whistling noise can be heard at the Haywards Heath railway station development site.

Locals have complained of noise pollution at the £35m development, which includes a new Waitrose and the redeveloped station.

Laboratory testing is taking place to find out why the site whistles - a problem thought to be ‘unique to Haywards Heath’.

Norman Webster, Mid Sussex District Council’s cabinet member for health and community, said: “The new train station car park is a standard design that has been installed at other locations without any noise issues, so it appears this whistle is unique to Haywards Heath.

“The developers are fully aware of the noise problem and have been conducting extensive testing, both on site and in laboratory conditions, in order to identify the exact conditions that cause the whistle.

“The data from these trials is currently being reviewed and analysed by the developer’s acoustic consultant, who is working on proposals to resolve the problem.”

Work began at the development, which features a new forecourt with shops and a new car park for 1,050 vehicles, in June 2015.

It is set to be completed later this year.
