Schools and community groups in Shinewater and Langney met to celebrate their nominees for local Community Champions at an awards dinner at the Mill.
The champions were nominated by local people and groups and the event was organised by the Shinewater and North Langney Neighbourhood Management partnership.
Ward councillor Alan Shuttleworth spoke on behalf of the organisers and said, “There are some fantastic volunteers in this area doing such a lot of work.
“It has been a real pleasure to bring them together to thank them for their efforts and their achievements. Our Peoples Champion, Stephen Saunders has made an enormous contribution to the community.”
Stephen Saunders won the award for his dedication in managing the Langney Wanderers Football Club whose players have achieved promotion every season for the last three years.
The Youth Champion award was presented to Liam Rakow for his work at as a peer mentor at Causeway, at the weekly Shinewater Park Run and for his support to the annual Fun Day.
Aimee Hollobone was named Junior Champion, and others thanked included Clair Gibbs and Paul Downes, for their work at the Shinewater Shaftesbury Centre, Barry Cushing for his work at the playing fields, Candy Vaughan, Lori Cronin and Veronica Graham for their work on behalf of the neighbourhood panel, Barbara Washington, Graham Weir and Tim Reading for their support for the Park Run, PC Andy Monico for his positive attitude and service, John Paine, who has been running a Junior Badminton Club at the
Sports and Community Centre for many years, Pat Brown who works at Kamsons for her kindness and support to local residents and Tracey Smith for her work with the Shinewater Fun Day.
