THE Redoubt is holding a series of free Heritage Open Days from September 6-9.
The seafront fortress is opening its doors and inviting people to uncover the hidden history of the building with behind the scenes tours.
It’s a great opportunity to look around the unique Georgian building and be enthralled by stories of bravery and military life including that of Eastbourne’s own Victoria Cross hero, the heroic charge of the Light Brigade and the renowned Royal Sussex Regiment.
Free tours will be available from guide Peter Harrison on September 6, 8 and 9 at 11am and 2.30pm.
At 11am he will be will discuss ‘Eastbourne vs. Napoleon’ – the Redoubt’s firepower and design as a fighting machine and at 2.30pm ‘A Soldier’s Life Is Terrible Hard’ will explore two centuries of military and civilian life in the Redoubt.
Both tours will visit areas in the fortress not normally open to the public.
Councillor Neil Stanley said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for residents and visitors to explore Eastbourne’s hidden treasure, the Redoubt fortress.”
There will also be giant boardgames to play with as part of the ongoing War Games exhibition.
