It’s the middle of August but Easatbourne residents have already been asked to think about Christmas and tell the Eastbourne Chamber of Commerce what they thought of the town’s Christmas lights last year.
The overwhelming response to a recent survey was that the lights were “shameful”.
A common complaint was that smaller places such as Polegate, Hailsham and Battle produced better displays during the festive season and it was about time Eastbourne matched them; in fact 99 per cent of respondents said they wanted a better light display this year.
One resident said, “When we have such a wonderful flower display on the seafront in summer to add to Eastbourne’s attractiveness why not make the Christmas lights an attraction too?”
Many thought that Eastbourne needed cheering up and that a good Christmas light display would give people a boost.
Christina Ewbank, Chief Executive of Eastbourne’s Chamber of Commerce said, “We have been asked by the Borough Council to manage the lights this year on their behalf so it’s heartening to hear that residents feel so strongly about improving Eastbourne’s attractiveness during the Christmas period.
“Unsurprisingly residents told us that a good light display will keep people in Eastbourne rather than go shopping elsewhere.
“One comment that stood out was a call to ‘make it magical for kids and make it magical again for us, the grown ups!’ whilst a whopping 99% of people said they would make a special journey with their family to see the lights.
“Now that we’ve got the backing of Eastbourne’s residents for an improved light display we’re starting to put together some fantastic plans to light up Eastbourne’s town centre. So watch this space!”
