A Hailsham teenager has regained her strength after receiving treatment for cancer thanks to an exercise programme at her local leisure centre.

Chloe Matthews was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma last July and underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment at The Royal Marsden Hospital before continuing her care at the Eastbourne District General Hospital.

The 15-year-old is now in remission and building up her strength and energy with the help of the Freedom Leisure exercise referral programme at Hailsham Leisure Centre.

She said, “I wasn’t very sporty before I became ill but I did like to swim and go walking with my family. The chemo and radiotherapy left me feeling very tired and weak and I thought the exercise programme would help. I’m very lucky that Steph offered to train me to fit in with my school hours and it’s made a huge difference.”

“After about five sessions I felt my energy return and I was able to increase the level of exercise. Steph made sure my programme fitted my exact needs and her special training in helping people with cancer gave me confidence that she understood what I needed.”

The exercise referral programme comprises 10 weekly sessions and costs £45. For more information or to register, please contact Stephanie.Wadlow@freedom-leisure.co.uk, or call Hailsham Leisure Centre on 01323 846755.
