Police have released CCTV images for the first time of two men in black hoodies who attacked a cash machine at a garage in Eastbourne.
The pair set about the machine at the Tesco Express store in Eastbourne Road, Willingdon, with a metal bar before forcing it open and grabbing bank notes.
Police have not said how much cash was stolen from the machine.
CCTV footage shows the offence took several hours to complete. The men moved away from the machine whenever they saw traffic approaching but then returned to it when they felt safe to continue breaking it open. They escaped on foot towards the rear of the Tesco store.
Officers are considering the possibility that they may have had an accomplice elsewhere in the road who alerted them to approaching traffic.
The theft happened between 2am and 5am on Saturday, July 27.
Police say the two thieves were both white and of average height and build. They were wearing black clothing and what appears to be hoodies with a cap underneath or hoodies with a fixed peak. One was wearing black gloves and the other white.
PC Kelley Matthews said: “The CCTV footage shows that the two men repeatedly left and returned to the machine over a period of several hours until they managed to get it open and stole thousands of pounds.
“We would like to speak to any drivers who pulled onto the forecourt in the early hours of July 27 and may have seen the men acting suspiciously.
“Others may have seen the men standing nearby and acting suspiciously in the moments between their attempts to get it open.
“They may not have realised the men were tampering with the machine but could have vital information about what the thieves did.
“Please come forward if you have any information about what happened, no matter what it is.”
