Two men have been sentenced to four years for an attempted robbery at an Eastbourne superstore last year.

Billy Kevin Brown, 32, of Coronation Gardens, Battle, and John Hayward, 45 Sutton Avenue, Seaford, appeared at Guildford Crown Court on Wednesday and were sentenced to four years each after pleading guilty to conspiracy to steal and given serious crime prevention orders.

The pair tried to rob a cash in transit van outside Waitrose supermarket in High Street, Eastbourne, at 11.20am on Tuesday April 30 last year.

Staff from the van were at the cashpoint at the store when they were approached by the two men who said they had a gun and demanded cash. The staff fought back, retained the cash and drove the men ran off who then ran towards the store’s car park area.

In driving the men off, the staff members made the attackers drop caps and glasses that they were using for disguise and a bag that held a hammer.

Detective Sergeant Dave Tye said, “These men tried to steal a lot of money and threatened two people going about their everyday jobs. Shoppers at Waitrose saw what happened and were very scared by what they saw.

“The sentences reflect the seriousness of the crime committed by these men. The serious crime prevention orders given by the judge are designed to disrupt their potential criminal activities for five years after they are be released from prison.

“This will assist the police in preventing further offending by these two men in the future and keeping the people of Sussex safer.”
