The workman who died after falling from Eastbourne Pier on Tuesday afternoon (August 19) has been named as Stephen Penrice.
The married 44-year-old from Sandylonning, Netherton, Cumbria, suffered a serious head injury when he fell from the fire-damaged structure, which he was working on as a contractor for MP Marines Ltd.
Emergency services were called to Eastbourne beach shortly after 4pm but Stephen, who was affectionately known as ‘Penny’, was sadly declared dead at the scene.
Eastbourne MP Stephen Lloyd has come forward to express his sadness at the death. He said, “This is desperately sad news and I know I speak for the whole town when I say the thoughts of everyone from Eastbourne and beyond are with his family and friends.
“Words are often inadequate at being able to capture such awful events.
“Clearly, the death of a man working to repair our beloved pier after the dreadful fire of only a few weeks ago has been devastating news for us all. I will be contacting Mr Penrice’s immediate family as soon as I receive the details from the pier owners, offering the profound condolences of our town.”
Mr Penrice’s next of kind has been informed and Sussex Police will now be joined by colleagues from the Health and Safety Executive to investigate the incident, which it is said could take months, maybe even years.
