A cyclist who knocked down and rode over a little girl on Eastbourne seafront last week is to be given a police caution for assault after handing himself in.

The 22-year-old is also likely to apologise to four-year-old Aaliyah Raj, who suffered serious facial injuries after the incident on the seafront promenade opposite the Queen’s Hotel last Thursday evening at 6.30pm.

Eastbourne Police said the police caution had come out after consultation with Aaliyah’s mother Samita.

A major appeal to find two cyclists was launched on social media after photographs of Aaliyah’s bruised face and cut ear were posted on Facebook and the Herald website.

The little girl had been to the seafront for an ice-cream with her mother when one of the two cyclists knocked her over and then rode off.

Police said today one of the cyclists had handed himself in and the other had been found.

Both men were then interviewed by detectives.

Both admitted riding on the seafront and police say they were completely co-operative with proceedings and also gave a reason for not stopping at the scene after the accident.

Their details have also been handed over to Eastbourne Borough Council, which is the authority responsible for prosecuting people who cycle on the seafront.
