A workman was airlifted to hospital this afternoon after falling onto the beach while carrying out reconstruction work on Eastbourne Pier.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 4.15pm when a worker from contractor MP Marine Ltd fell from his rig on the east side of the pier.

Medics worked for at least half an hour at the water’s edge.

Dozens of workmen had been contracted in after a major fire ripped through the historic structure on 30 July.

The extent of the man’s injuries are not yet known.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said, “The man was being treated for a serious head injury. He was being flown to hospital in a life threatening condition.

“The Health and Safety Executive has been informed as the man was working on the pier.”
