Health chiefs have decided to permanently downgrade maternity services at the DGH.

East Sussex CCGs met at Eastbourne’s Winter Garden today (June 25) to reveal the outcome of the Better Beginnings consultation. They had to choose between six options for the future of local NHS maternity, paediatric and emergency gynaecology services.

All three CCG Governing Bodies agreed to back option 6 – which means consultant-led maternity services will only be provided at the Conquest.

Eastbourne will have a midwife-led birthing unit and a both Eastbourne and Hastings will have a short stay paediatric assessment unit.

The CCGs said it was ‘the best possible solution to achieving safe and high quality services for women and children in East Sussex’.

Save the DGH had been battling to get health bosses to consider an Option 7 - keeping consultant-led maternity at both sites.

ss of issues raised as part of the Better Beginnings process. These relate mainly to the consistency of care for women who currently receive services from both ESHT and Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.” ENDS
