An Eastbourne pet has been named as one of the finalists in the Cats Protection’s National Cat Awards 2014.
Jessie and her owner, Sophie Jones, have been shortlisted in the Purina Better Together category of the competition, the final of which was due to take place last night (Thursday, August 7).
After a difficult couple of years being passed from home to home, Jessie was two years old when she was adopted by Sophie’s family. The beloved pet has helped the teenager cope with the loss of a close family member and remained a faithful friend when Sophie had difficulties starting secondary school.
Now nine -years-old, Jessie has developed a stomach sensitivity, so 18-year-old Sophie has found a job to help pay expensive veterinary bills for her furry friend.
Sophie said, “Jessie has helped us a lot with the death of a loved one. She’d come and sit with you and just be with you. I was bullied and when I used to come home, it would be Jessie who would get out of bed and come greet me. My mum said she would never get out of bed until I came home. We just love her to pieces.”
Jessie is one of 17 finalists at the awards and in line for the National Cat of the Year award. Visit www.eastbourneherald.co.uk to watch a video of Jessie and Sophie.
