An HM Coastguard Rescue Officer who saved a suicidal woman’s life has been presented with the Resident of the Month Award.

Keith Rayment was on call at Beachy Head when the chaplain told him they were concerned for the welfare of a woman who might be in the area.

Keith found the woman in her car, in a car park, and could see she had a razor blade at her wrist. He opened the door and threw the blade away from her, and although she produced more, he managed to administer first aid and call for help from other emergency services.

The Resident of the Month Award recognises unsung heroes in the town and is sponsored jointly by Advanta Chartered Accountants and the Eastbourne Herald.

Michael Cottingham, a director at Advanta, presented Keith with his Resident of the Month certificate.

Michael said, “Keith’s actions were very brave. Although he describes his part in the situation as being in the right place at the right time, he saved the woman’s life without any thought for the danger he was in as she had several blades.

“I am delighted to mark Keith’s heroic actions and present him with the Resident of the Month Award for December.”

As part of his award, Keith will also receive a complimentary meal for two at Ridgways restaurant in Meads. To nominate someone who you think deserves the Resident of the Month Award, email info@advanta-ca.com or call 411222.
