The Eastbourne-based hearing loss charity Hearing Link is looking for hearing aid wearers to become secret shoppers in the town.
It’s all part of the campaign Let’s Loop Eastbourne, which is backed by the Herald, and aims to provide greater awareness and provision of hearing loops in the town.
There are an estimated 20,000 hearing aid wearers in Eastbourne and hearing loops are now installed in many businesses and public buildings which help hearing aid wearers to communicate better.
On July 12 (12.30pm-2.30pm), Hearing Link is holding a Loop Awareness Day at the Age Concern offices in Junction Road. Visitors will have a chance to find out more about hearing loops and will be encouraged to join volunteers for a walk around the town centre to find out just how good the provision is.
“We would like to get more people involved with the loop checking,” explained Dave King, Hearing Link’s user experience manager. “We already have a small team of volunteers who check on loops in the town about once a month, but we would be very keen to have more. The time commitment is very small, but this is a great way for hearing aid wearers to make a difference to the quality of loops in the town.”
The initiative is part of a national Hearing Loop Awareness Week, which runs from July 12-20 and is urging hearing aid users to learn more about this valuable technology.
There are around 10 million people in the UK with hearing loss.
About two million use hearing aids and most could benefit from using a hearing loop in public places to cut out background noise and reduce the strain of listening over a distance.
