Youngsters get stuck into film project

A NEW youth club, a young people's forum and a film project are just some of the ways Hampden Park youngsters are getting involved with the community.

A partnership between service providers in Eastbourne is aiming to make a real difference to the lives of young people in the town and helping to combat incidents of antisocial behaviour in the Hampden Park area.

The group, which includes Eastbourne Homes, Eastbourne Borough Council, East Sussex County Council Youth Development Service, Places for People, Southern Horizon and Raglan Housing, is working to increase the number of activities available for young people.

A range of initiatives have been launched and are being extremely well supported.

A new youth club has been opened at Hampden Park Community Centre in Brodrick Road. Young people attend between 6pm and 8pm and take part in DJ workshops, music production, sports, cookery lessons, art classes and a film project (pictured).

The Young Persons Panel is based in Hampden Park and gives the many people that attend an opportunity to voice their views on live issues in Eastbourne, and meet and question key decision makers in the town.

Thanks to the panel a new BMX track is being installed in the New Year on Cross Levels Way that has been designed by leading experts in the sport.

The launch of a street soccer tournament in the Willingdon Trees Area is planned. The tournament is open to young people of all ages.

Everol Sampson, resident involvement officer at Eastbourne Homes, said, "It is very wrong to make sweeping statements condemning young people whenever a group of teenagers appear together.

"We are doing some fantastic work with them and our film project is a great example of that. The first film being produced is looking at the impressions young and old people have of each other and challenging the unfair stereotypes."
