YMCA project is good for the community
New shed gathering
A NEW shed has taken pride of place in Archery Court’s garden thanks to students on the YMCA Sussex Central construction course.
Four students spent three days constructing and painting the shed at Archery Court, which is a sheltered housing block in Willoughby Crescent.
Eastbourne Homes, which looks after the Court, has strong links with local youth groups and schools, including the YMCA, which has a base across the road from Archery Court. The 15 and 16 year old students don’t go to school, so attending College Central helps them gain qualifications and experience to get them back on track into education.
Archery Court’s on site co-ordinator, Debbie Buckley, spoke to residents about the opportunity to collaborate on the project and there was overwhelming support for space to store garden equipment. She said, “What the students have done for residents is great. We all got together for a coffee morning to discuss the design and location of the shed. It’s a good community link to work on a project like this with our neighbours and I hope in future other supported housing sights are also able to benefit from these types of projects.”
Archery Court resident Sylvia Thomas said, “I think they’ve done a fantastic job and it looks very nice. I’m sure it will be used a lot.”
Student key worker Jay Finch said, “College Central is very proud of the achievements made by the pupils and how they have worked in collaboration with the residents of the home to create a fantastic finished product. We feel the pupils have given back to their community and in doing so have gained hands on practical experience of the working world. This has been a great opportunity for the pupils to interact with a social group that they previously would not have spoken to and they have presented themselves with a great deal of maturity and respect.”
