X-Factor contestant lends a hand at charity fundraiser in Newhaven

X-FACTOR contestant Daryl Markham entertained the crowds at a charity fundraiser in Newhaven last week.

The Seaford resident was asked if he could attend the event which saw people getting their heads shaved and hair cut in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Mo Manville decided to organise the do after her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent chemotherapy.

She asked Mary O'Connell, manager of the Bridge Inn, if the pub could be the venue for the fundraiser and she happily agreed.

Mo was one of a number of people who got their heads shaved and locks chopped and thanks to everyone's brave efforts and generosity more than 1,450 has been raised so far.

She said, "It was an absolutely brilliant night.

"We so far have raised about 1,450 but we are going to top 1,500.

"Everyone had a wonderful night, so many people had their heads shaved or hair cut and the lady was there doing it until 10.45pm.

"Daryl turned up and he was fabulous, he did a couple of songs and he sang with my sister and sang a song to her."

Many customers turned up in pink and paid a donation and a raffle also boosted the charity pot.

Mo, a Newhaven resident, added, "It feels cold at the moment and I'm wearing a hat as I normally have thick hair.

"It's quite emotional, I looked up and could see my hair getting shaved at the back and my sister had tears running down her face."

Daryl was more than happy to support the night as the cause is close to his heart.

The Vale Road resident, who made it through to the last 50 people on X-Factor but was not selected for the remaining 24 places, lost his 37-year-old brother Gary to lung cancer last year.
