Work to start on cafe seating area
Work will begin next week to deliver the temporary café and seating area at the Wish Tower site.
Contractors appointed by Eastbourne Borough Council will prepare the site by laying wooden decking and upgrading utility supplies.
Once the site is ready, the council will then use its own catering department to offer refreshments from a temporary unit with external seating.
It is hoped the café will be open by Easter weekend, March 29, offering a range of light refreshments.
The original Wish Tower restaurant was demolished last year when a survey revealed that the building was in a far worse condition than expected and that a refurbishment programme was not viable, according to a council spokesperson.
Cllr Carolyn Heaps, portfolio holder for tourism and leisure, said, “The Wish Tower site is a vital element in our seafront tourism offer, and will eventually be linked to the redeveloped Devonshire Park complex.
“While we plan for a suitable permanent facility that is fitting for this fabulous location, we are pleased to be on course to open a temporary catering offer.
“I am confident the temporary café will become a huge hit with residents and visitors enjoying the promenade, starting this Easter.”
The council spokesperson added, “Eventually it is planned that a permanent restaurant and café, housed in a newly built structure, will open on the site, helping to boost visitor numbers to Eastbourne and provide a fitting legacy to the Foyle family who helped fund the original Wish Tower restaurant.”
