Work to safeguard historic buildings

Plans to safeguard some of Eastbourne’s most iconic buildings for generations to come are on target and have won the support of an independent review team – despite fierce criticism from residents.

Landmarks including the Bandstand, Congress Theatre and the Town Hall have been neglected in recent years by various political administrations at the council much to the anger of council tax payers.

But watchdogs say a new asset management strategy has already delivered in-depth condition surveys on key operational properties and has led to a programme of repair work and will allow the council to develop a crucial “asset challenge” study of how best to develop and use Eastbourne’s property portfolio.

A report to the cabinet committee this week outlined how the urgent repair work is progressing well with initial work completed on the Bandstand with more to follow in 2013, while work on the Town Hall will start later this year.

In December, Cabinet members will consider proposals for the first phase of the regeneration of Devonshire Park and repairs to the Congress Theatre.
