A charity which provides support to other good causes has been given an £815,000 Lottery grant to help it continue its impressive work.

3VA, which is based in Saffrons Road, was launched back in November 2009 when the Eastbourne Association of Voluntary Services joined forces with the South Downs Council for Voluntary Services.

Since then it has gone on to help scores of other charities across Eastbourne and further afield in places like Lewes and Wealden – offering help and advice on how to develop the voluntary and community sector.

The charity achieves this by helping new groups set up and establish themselves, find funding, provide training to members and attempt to improve the way they are run to make them more efficient.

And 3VA also organisers regular networking events which help groups get together to share experience and expertise, as well as trying to provide a voice for the hundreds of volunteers living and working locally.

It is part funded by East Sussex County Council, Eastbourne Borough Council and neighbouring authorities in Lewes and Wealden District Council as well as the local NHS.

However, the bumper grant presented to the charity on Monday by the The BIG Lottery initiative was hugely appreciated and will prove vital in helping 3VA expand and improve its services.

Two other charities were also given cheques at the Kings Centre event.

Young Pioneers is based in Catsfield but works with young people in the Eastbourne area and was given £485,000 to help fund its healthy lifestyle programmes. The scheme aims to reduce the level of obesity and alcohol misuse while encouraging young people to cook healthier food. One of its particularly successful projects teaches people how to keep their weekly food bill to just £10.50.

And Project Arts, which also works with Eastbourne people, was given £70,000 for its work with people who have severe neurological and physical impairments by introducing them to art and producing work for local exhibitions.
