Welcome grant helps Foodbank train volunteers

A charity scheme which is helping feed vulnerable and under pressure people in Eastbourne has been given a £2,000 cash boost to help it continue its good work.

Eastbourne Foodbank was set up as a way of providing food parcels to families and individuals living locally who are experiencing financial hardship and struggling to make ends meet.

And since it was launched it has helped countless people across the town with its three-day emergency food packages, which are collected in exchange for a voucher given to the person by doctors, health visitors, social workers and the Citizens Advice Bureau.

The volunteer-run project relies on donations, both food and financial, and just last week it received a bumper £2,000 from The Co-operative’s community fund.

The cash influx means organisers at the Foodbank can pay for training for its ever-growing stable of volunteers and a spokesman for the charity said they were delighted with the generous donation.

Lisa Smart said, “Being a volunteer at the Foodbank is about so much more than simply handing a parcel of food over and then closing the front door.

“The people and families we visit are often isolated from the rest of society, feel embarrassed and don’t know where to turn for help.

“Thanks to this generous grant we have been able to send 20 of our volunteers on a training course, giving them the confidence they need to make a real difference.”
