Waterson happy to receive questions about expenses

DETAILS of Eastbourne MP Nigel Waterson's expenses were released last week.

The House of Commons published heavily edited documents setting out some details of the expenses claims of every MP last Friday and among them were expenses claimed by Mr Waterson, the town's MP for more than 13 years.

Mr Waterson has a home in Wannock and claims for his second home in Beckenham in Kent.

While some MPs have become embroiled in the national expenses scandal, Mr Waterson has said his constituents would find nothing untoward in his claims and unlike many of his political colleagues has not broken any of the rules of the House of Commons allowances or gone against the spirit of the rules.

MPs can claim an Additional Costs Allowance, paid to reimburse MPs for necessary costs incurred when staying overnight away from their main home; the Incidental Expenses Provision, the costs associated with running an office; and the Communications Allowance, introduced in 2007/08, which provides funds for MPs to communicate with constituents.

Through the Additional Costs Allowance, which encompasses Mr Waterson's home in Beckenham, from April 2007 to April 2008 the MP claimed 16,963 on mortgage payments, 800 on food, 500 on utilities, 1,820 on council tax, 500 on communications, 750 on cleaning, 1,000 on service and maintenance and 750 on insurance and security.

As details of all the MPs expenses were released, Mr Waterson said, "People are able to see my expense claims on line."

And he added, "I am happy to answer any reasonable requests and questions from my constituents."

Polegate MP Norman Baker's expenses have also been published. From April 2007 to the end of March 2008 he claimed 18,459.96 in rent.
