Visitors raise £17,000 for lifeboat service
RESIDENTS and summer visitors to Seaford, Alfriston, Newhaven and surrounding areas, have raised a record £17,000 towards running the lifeboat service.
The impressive amount was raised from July to October when a series of events were held.
Flag week in Seaford and Alfriston produced 2,680 and Blatchington Golf Club donated 1,050 from a charity competition.
Many Seaford organisations took part in the annual lifeboat fete at Newhaven in July which was the highest contributor to the total with 8,020.
Flag week in Newhaven raised a further 5,225, a collection on Seaford seafront in July during a lifeboat demonstration and two book sales took the final total to more than 17,000.
Derek Payne, chairman of the Seaford and Newhaven fundraising committee, said that local support for the lifeboats has never been higher despite the downturn in the local economy.
He said, "Local people and visitors, who sometimes see Newhaven lifeboat on rescue or training missions, continue to generously help fund the ever-increasing costs of the service. We are very grateful to every one of them."
So far this year the volunteer crew of the lifeboat have answered 43 calls and helped to bring some 70 people to safety.
