University student in court over Eastbourne betting shop robberies

A 21-year-old student has appeared in court this morning (Thursday) in connection with three armed robberies at Eastbourne betting shops.

Twenty-one-year-old Rowan Jones, who lives in Latimer Road and is studying sports science at the Eastbourne campus of the University of Brighton, spoke only to confirm his name and address during the 20 minute hearing at Eastbourne Law Courts.

He was arrested in Gildredge Road by police investigating the raids on Wednesday evening and brought before magistrates the following day.

Jones, originally from South Norwood, South London was flanked by two security guards and was dressed in a black sweatshirt and jogging bottoms.

He is accused of three armed robberies at Ladbrokes branches in Eastbourne and faces three further charges of possessing a firearm.

Jones is alleged to have robbed cashier Toby Taylor of £1,400 at Ladbrokes in Seaside on December 3; Michael Vinter of £500 at Ladbrokes in Carlisle Road on December 20 and robbing David Hardy of £500 at the Ladbrokes branch in Seaside on the morning of January 9.

An application for bail was made by Jones’ solicitor Christos Christou, but this was refused by the three magistrates.

He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance which will be at Lewes Crown Court on March 28.
