Uninsured drivers target in day-long police crackdown
POLICE stopped more than 100 cars during a crackdown on uninsured drivers.
As part of Eastbourne Police’s ongoing Operation Vanquish, which targets law-breaking motorists, officers spend the day on Cross Levels Way carrying out random checks on licences.
The Force’s road policing unit was joined on the exercise by officials from the DVLA and HM Revenue and Customs and together they stopped dozens of vehicles, including cars, vans, lorries, coaches and motorcycles.
They were all given the once over in the Sussex Downs College car park and drivers ended up being fined for a variety of offences including using a mobile phone while driving, having an expired MOT or no insurance.
Other motorists were given a verbal warning, including some for not having the correct booster seats of belts for their children.
Alongside the drive to catch out car owners, staff from the Department of Work and Pensions also took part in the operation, speaking to 103 drivers and passengers to see if they were claiming eligible benefits.
They issued three cautions and dealt with one instance of fraud.
Speaking after the day long exercise, PC Andy Smith said, “This was a successful operation with around 100 vehicles being stopped.
“Operation Vanquish will be continuing throughout Sussex.”
He also asked eagle-eyed locals to report anyone they see using their mobile phone or committing other offences while driving.
