‘Troubled’ rail bridge: Panel calls for action

IT’S A CASE of a bridge over a troubled railway line in Hampden Park.

That’s according to concerned residents who want to see an end to years of vandalism at the bridge which links Brodrick Road to Percival Road in east Hampden Park.

The Hampden Park Neighbourhood Panel says vandals, some of whom are throwing stones from the bridge, are putting rail passengers and drivers at risk.

Only recently a supermarket trolley was thrown onto the railway line and had to be retrieved.

The panel now has the backing of the Conservative Action Team in the village which says although the bridge is at the centre of the trouble, it needs to be kept open as it is used as an important cut through by pupils and parents from the Eastbourne Academy and Hampden Park Infant School.

Caroline Ansell from the team said, “The closure of this important local bridge is not an option for us, but neither is talk without action.

“We are looking to Network Rail and British Transport Police to put strategies in place to alleviate this problem.

“This is an on-going problem and not confined to our area alone.

“There must be a way forward which will deliver on safety and safeguard the bridge which is vital infrastructure in this neighbourhood.

“We are asking residents to get in touch so that we can impress upon the decision-makers just how important this bridge really is for us.

“The Neighbourhood Panel does a top job in keeping this issue on everyone’s agenda and we want to support them as much as possible.”
