Tributes paid to death crash friends

Tributes have been paid to two 24-year-olds who died after their car hit a tree.

Jamie Parris, of Southfield in Polegate, and Mark Winter, of Common Lane in Berwick, were travelling to Mr Winter's home when the car came off the road.

Mr Winter was driving a Mitsubishi Evolution and it is believed he lost control of the vehicle in Common Lane at around 11.15pm.

Friends following in another car phoned 999 after finding the wreckage minutes after the accident.

Emergency services rushed to the location, a winding country lane east of the A27, and the pair were cut from the car but pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Parris, formerly known as Jamie Munn, lived with his mother. Neighbour Anne Crowhurst said, "I was very shocked when his mum told us because I saw him go out that day.

"He was a very polite lad - my husband is elderly and Jamie helped me out once or twice.

"It is a tragic accident and we are all very sorry and would like to send our condolences to the family."

Ed Copping, also 24, had been friends with Mr Parris since 1999.

He said, "It has not really sunk in yet. I just cannot believe something like this has happened.

"He was a hard-working person and knew lots of people in the area so he will be missed by many."

Mr Parris was a pupil at Willingdon Community School and a former schoolmate said, "Jamie was pretty quiet and kept himself to himself but he was a nice lad."

Kirsty Mewett and Tony Gatward added, "Jamie Munn was such an amazing guy who had time for everyone.

"He will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts."

Mr Parris worked with the other crash victim, Mark Winter, who was a director at the family business CB Winter and Son Turf and Paving on Common Lane, Berwick - around 100 yards from the scene of the accident.

The Herald understands Mark was a car enthusiast and had recently passed his driving test. The pair had been to the nearby

Barley Mow pub on the A27 shortly before the smash.

Landlady Katie Snow, who had known Mark Winter since he was 16, said, "They had been out for dinner and popped in on their way home on Tuesday night and left here around 11pm.

"It is tragic and everyone is so shocked to hear the news. You could not have found a nicer man and he was very popular in the village.

"He will be missed greatly."

Both families were too upset to speak to the Herald but tributes and flowers have been left at the scene of the crash.

A friend named Stu wrote, "Marky boy, miss you buddy. Rest in peace."

Another wrote, "One of life's good guys. What a waste."

Police investigating the incident are appealing for witnesses and ask anyone who saw the crash to call 0845 60 70 999 quoting Operation Sydenham.
