Traffic chaos has marred the opening of the new multimillion Morrisons supermarket after management told staff to stay away from the on-site car park.

The store opened its doors for the first time on Monday but the businesses in nearby roads were left cursing their new neighbours after the store’s workers swerved the official parking to leave space for customers.

The upshot of the staff leaving their cars in on street bays was gridlock across the area, with streets like Edward Road jam packed.

At one point a truck delivering new cars to a dealership was stuck and could not move – much to the annoyance of the owners. This in turn led to tail backs and customers leaving the nearby Travel Lodge having to pull out the wrong way onto the bypass to avoid the crush.

Store manager John Howell said, “During store opening week, we advise our colleagues to park elsewhere to free up as many spaces as possible for our new customers.

“We’re sorry if this has caused congestion and will remind staff to be sensitive when parking their cars.”
