Town to benefit from UK holiday boom

HOLIDAY firms predict Eastbourne will benefit from the credit crunch this summer as twice as many Britons are planning to spend their holidays in the UK – specifically in traditional seaside towns.

Johnsons Coach and Bus Travel, a West Midlands- based company, said bookings are better than ever for trips in this country and the most popular destinations were Eastbourne and Scarborough.

A report from the Confederation of Passenger Transport, which surveyed 3,000 people, revealed that 60 per cent of people are unwilling to give up holidays, but 50 per cent said they needed to cut costs and were planning a cheaper break.

Seaside hotels, campsites, B&Bs and coach and caravan companies are all expected to benefit.

Eastbourne Borough Council spokesperson for tourism Councillor Steve Wallis said, "Eastbourne makes the perfect destination for a UK break and is situated in a glorious position on the Sussex coastline.

"With its own unique microclimate offering year round sunshine, Brits don't even need to go abroad for warmer weather.

"With predictions that there will be double the number of holidaymakers enjoying breaks in Britain this year, Eastbourne makes a top location for visitors and we'll be using special offers advertised on our website to entice people here and help them save money at the same time."

And Marco Giorgi of the Afton Hotel, who is vice chairman of the Eastbourne Hospitality Association, added, "I do believe that Eastbourne offers the perfect break with an excellent climate, proximity to the South Downs and wonderful seafront.

"Hotels in the town are investing heavily to ensure that the offer remains of a high quality and the borough council continues to expand the program of events available to visitors.

"So yes, everything is in place to welcome hoards of people to our lovely town – let's just hope they can find a parking space.

"To that end the Eastbourne Hospitality Association is in discussions with East Sussex County Council about addressing certain crucial issues as soon as possible, which are paramount to making sure Eastbourne does not become a 'no go area'.
