Town Hall facelift begins this week

A major refurbishment will get underway at Eastbourne Town Hall this week.

The much loved civic centre requires re-roofing on the east and west tower areas.

This will involve extensive scaffolding around the building and a temporary roof created to help protect the building while the work is carried out.

When the new roof is completed the scaffolding will be used by contractors to carry out major window repairs and redecoration to each side of the Town Hall.

The scaffolding will start going up this week with the work to the roof due to begin by the end of February. The whole project is expected to last 26 weeks.

Eastbourne Borough Council leader David Tutt said, “Our Town Hall is one of the most impressive in the country. It is a wonderful example of Victorian design and construction.

“However, like all old buildings it needs a lot of care and attention and this essential work will ensure future generations can continue to enjoy using it.

“As many people know, while the Town Hall has served Eastbourne so well over so many years, the uses of the building have changed to take account of more modern ways of working. We’ve now relocated most of our council offices and functions to 1 Grove Road, freeing the Town Hall up for greater community use.”

Despite Eastbourne being the most bombed town on the south coast during World War II, the Town Hall escaped any major damage and still benefits from all the original features, including the highest quality fixtures and fittings, oak panelling, marble mosaic floors and stained glass.

Plans are in place to minimise the inevitable impact on users of the Town Hall.

It is likely that some areas will need to be vacated while work on the windows in specific rooms is carried out.

The Registrars will remain in place throughout the period with wedding parties advised accordingly.

Eastbourne Town Hall was build on the site known as Stocks Bank and built at a cost of £35,000. The council met there for the first time in 1886.
