Tourist failed to insure van
A SPANISH holidaymaker who bought a van during his stay in Eastbourne failed to get insurance because he didn't understand the law, a court has heard.
Carlos Gordobueno, of no fixed address, was found to be driving a Ford Escort van in St Anthony's Avenue with no insurance on July 22.
The 37-year-old appeared before the town's magistrates on Friday morning (July 31) and pleaded guilty to the offence but explained he didn't understand the law.
An interpreter assisted Gordobueno during the hearing and he told the court, "I did not for one moment intend to break the law.
"I thought the man who sold me the van had arranged insurance.
"I just didn't realise and was still learning about the laws."
Gordobueno showed the court he had purchased insurance on July 23, as soon as the matter was explained to him by police.
Magistrates said they recognised the defendant was not aware of the law.
He was given an absolute discharge and his non-existent British driving licence was endorsed with six points.
Magistrates told Gordobueno these points would not show on his Spanish driving licence but would remain on a computer in the UK.
He is due to drive the van back to Spain this week.
