Tough going but walkers take the lighthouse challenge in their stride

Save our Stripes walk to the lighthouse

Save our Stripes walk to the lighthouse

MORE than 200 intrepid walkers took part in a fund-raising hike to the lighthouse on Saturday.

The challenge saw participants head off from the tea kiosk near St Bede’s School and over the Downs to Cow Gap before walking around Beachy Head Lighthouse and turning back.

It took about an hour to reach the lighthouse across slippery rocks and beach before the walkers set off on the return journey. The fundraiser was organised by the Rotary Club of Eastbourne AM with the Eastbourne Herald as part of the Keep the Stripes campaign and also in aid of the Chestnut Tree Hospice.

The lighthouse is in need of repainting and Saturday’s event helped to boost the coffers. Campaigners are planning other events to help reach the target so refurbishment can begin.
